Snowfall warnings are in place north of the St. Lawrence River as widespread snow fills the skies over Quebec to round out the weekend.

Heavy rain that spread into the province on Saturday will transition to wet snow into Sunday as cold air flows across the region. Some communities will see hefty snowfall totals by Sunday evening.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions as precipitation switches, especially on Sunday. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Consider modifying any non-essential travel plans.

Sunday: Snow continues, switch back to rain possible

We should see widespread steady snow across southern and eastern Quebec by the pre-dawn hours on Sunday. Folks from Montreal and the Eastern Townships up the river toward Quebec City may wake up to heavy snowfall rates of several centimetres per hour.

The heaviest snow will move up the St. Lawrence toward Quebec City through the day.

Periods of snow will continue across Montreal and the Eastern Townships into Sunday evening.

All indications point toward cold air hanging on around Montreal, which will allow precipitation to remain snow as opposed to changing back over to rain. This will allow the opportunity for 10 cm of snow to fall in downtown Montreal, with more than 20 cm on tap for the North Shore.

It’s worth noting, though, that temperatures fluctuating by just one or two degrees could have a significant impact on precipitation types and snowfall totals in and around Montreal.

Much heavier accumulations are expected into the Laurentians, with 20-40 cm falling through Monday. Folks around Quebec City will likely end up with a shovellable 15-25 cm of snow from this system, with 20-40 cm on the way for Gaspé.

Looking ahead, early next week will see conditions on the cooler side of seasonal, then trending warmer with well above-seasonal temperatures for a few days ahead of another system late next week or next weekend.

A much colder pattern is expected to develop around the official first day of spring, continuing through the end of March and into early April.
