Exeter citizens to watch out for scam calls, police say

EXETER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Exeter Police Department is notifying the public of a scam that has falsely identified itself as the department.

Police say Tuesday morning they were notified by an elderly citizen who brought to their attention a scam call they received.

According to investigators, the scammer falsely identified themself as “Chief Hall” from Exeter PD and told the woman she would be arrested for a purchase she made recently. They then identified the first three digits of the woman’s bank card she used.

Detectives say the scammer was able to match the department’s local phone number to appear real.

Scammers have the ability to mask their actual phone numbers with any other phone number on display to make people believe what they are saying.

Officers say they would not ever contact any citizen in this manner and advise people to never give out any personal information. They add scams like these are very common, especially in the elderly community.

Anyone who has received any phone calls in this manner is asked to contact the Exeter Police Department at (559) 592-3103.
