NEW YORK (PIX11) — Crews are working on both sides of the Hudson River to build the Gateway Tunnel Project.

The $16 billion project will add two new tracks for NJ Transit and Amtrak and double the available capacity between New York and New Jersey.

Managers have also completed an important round of paperwork.

Gateway Development Corporation CEO Kris Kolluri called the submission the last milestone on the path to fully funding the project.

“The pace of progress has been unprecedented, and Gateway has never missed a submission deadline during this process,” he said.

The federal government is paying for half with the states of New York and New Jersey funding the balance.

For the next two years, work will continue on both sides of the river. A giant machine will dig the new structure under the river.

It is set to open in 2035.
