Rick Gates, a former senior official in President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, has settled a suit against him by his former attorneys, who claimed he stiffed them on nearly $369,000 in legal fees defending him in the criminal action brought by the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller III.

New York City-based Doar Rieck Kaley & Mack represented Gates after the Special Counsel’s Office brought charges against Gates and his former boss, Paul Manafort, related to money laundering, failing to register as foreign agents, and bank and tax fraud.

In February, firm name attorney Walter Mack sought to be removed as Gates’ counsel, citing irreconcilable differences. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the District of Columbia approved the move. Shortly after, Gates, through his new counsel, Sidley Austin senior counsel Thomas Green, pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges and entered into a cooperation agreement with the government.

In a letter to U.S. District Judge George Daniels of the Southern District of New York, private attorney Joel A. Siegel stated that the legal action has been settled. Siegel did not outline the terms of the settlement. Siegel attached a signed order of voluntary dismissal from himself and Gates’ counsel, Sidley Austin’s Green and partner Steven Bierman.

Neither Green or Bierman responded to a request for comment.

Siegel previously called the suit a “garden-variety failure to pay for services rendered.” He did not respond to a request for details about the settlement.
