Former Oregon State quarterback Marcus McMaryion quickly found a landing spot in the Mountain West.

A few days after announcing his decision to leave Corvallis, McMaryion announced Tuesday night he will transfer to Fresno State. The move to Fresno is a homecoming for McMaryion, who is from nearby Dinuba, California.

McMaryion started six games for the Beavers in 2016 but decided to transfer after OSU coach Gary Andersen named junior college transfer Jake Luton the team’s starting quarterback. McMaryion, who earned his degree from Oregon State, has two years remaining and is immediately eligible to suit up for the Bulldogs. Once cleared to join the team, McMaryion will presumably battle to start with Chason Virgil, who started 10 games for Fresno last year.

According to the Fresno Bee, Virgil was the No. 1 quarterback coming out of spring practice and “has held a solid lead” over junior college transfer Jorge Reyna during preseason camp. Virgil, a junior, threw for 2,021 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 51.6 percent of his passes in 2016. Fresno went 1-11 and now has former Cal coach Jeff Tedford as its head coach.

McMaryion has quite a bit of Pac-12 experience, but it won’t be easy to come in and learn a new system this late in the summer. He started the final six games of the year in 2016 and threw for 1,286 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He led the Beavers to wins over Arizona and in-state rival Oregon. In 2015, McMaryion appeared in seven games (one start) and threw for 403 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Fresno opens its season with a home game against FCS Incarnate Word on Sept. 2 before two difficult trips to Alabama and Washington in weeks two and three.
