One of two former University of Iowa football players convicted of assault stemming from a 2007 sexual encounter with a student-athlete could avoid jail time after testifying at the trial of his former teammate.
Abe Satterfield of Erie, Pa., is scheduled to be sentenced Friday at the Johnson County courthouse.
Prosecutors had alleged he sexually assaulted the woman in a vacant dorm room, then allowed teammate Cedric Everson to do the same while she slept. Satterfield maintained the sex was consensual.
In a deal with prosecutors, Satterfield pleaded guilty to assault with intent to inflict serious injury and testified at Everson's trial last week. Prosecutors agreed to recommend a suspended sentence.
Everson was convicted Thursday of misdemeanor assault and faces up to 30 days in jail.
