Evergy: Power outages mostly fixed, some may remain until Wednesday

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Evergy is giving an update to its efforts to repair downed power lines in the aftermath of a weekend storm that knocked power out across parts of Kansas and Missouri.

The company says 95% of the 106,000 customers who had their power knocked out have had their services restored as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21. Around 6,000 customers remain without power in the hardest-hit areas of Kansas and Missouri.

“More than 1,600 personnel are in the field working on stages of power restoration. Evergy crews began restoring power Sunday as soon as it was safe to do so. In addition to local crews, Evergy crews from other communities, contractors and crews from Liberty Utilities have joined to assist with the restoration work Monday. To clear extensive tree damage, 175 vegetation crews have been working in storm-struck areas to help remove limbs and debris so that line crews can repair outages.”

Courtney Lewis, Evergy spokeswoman

Some customers may remain without power until Wednesday, May 21. The majority of these Evergy customers live in and around the following population centers:

  • Hutchinson

  • Newton

  • Prairie Village

  • Shawnee

  • Overland Park

  • Parkville

  • Weatherby Lake

  • Gladstone

  • Riverside

Lewis says some parts of Evergy’s service area experienced extensive damage to distribution and transmission systems during the severe weather. More than 105 transmission poles have been replaced in the Hutchinson and Newton areas alone.
