Event is planned to honor Vietnam veterans

Mar. 7—A local group wants to connect with Vietnam War veterans.

According to a media release from the Oneonta Chapter of Daughters of the Revolution, Congress authorized the establishment of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration in 2012. The primary objective of the organization is "to thank and honor our Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of our nation," the release said.

Since that time, commemorative partners such as the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have held hundreds of events honoring those veterans. As a token of the event, veterans have been presented with a pin. Recently the commemoration has expanded their program to include surviving spouses of deceased veterans, the release said.

An event is being planned by the Oneonta Chapter NSDAR, Otsego Chapter NSDAR and Vietnam Veterans of America Post 85 for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, to honor area veterans and their families. The event will be held at the Masonic Temple at 322 Main St. (at the corner of Main and Grand streets) in Oneonta. The building is accessible and has ample parking, according to the release.

Living veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. armed forces at any time during the period Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 regardless of location of service will be honored, as will their spouses.

Those interested in participating in the event and receiving a pin should register by calling 607-965-6419 or 607-434-9884. For more information about the Vietnam War commission, visit the website vietnamwar50th.com
