EU's Von der Leyen to US Senate: Approve Ukraine aid 'as soon as possible'

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for the U.S. Senate to expedite its approval of a $60 billion military aid package to Ukraine, following its passage in the House of Representatives. In a statement posted on X on April 20, von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of the situation.

"Ukrainians deserve all the support they can get to fight Russia," von der Leyen stated.

"I welcome the positive vote of the U.S. House of Representatives," she wrote. "We now ask the U.S. Senate to vote as soon as possible, as lives are at stake. Transatlantic allies stand united in support of freedom and democracy."

Echoing von der Leyen's sentiments, European Council President Charles Michel described the House's vote as "a clear signal to the Kremlin: those who believe in freedom and the UN Charter will continue to support Ukraine and its people."

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to allocate the $60 billion for military aid to Ukraine on April 20. The bill, numbered 8035 and initiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson's team, received the backing of 311 congressmen, with 112 opposing and one abstaining.
