EU's highest court rules that Hungary's reduced retirement age for judges is discriminatory
LUXEMBOURG - The EU's highest court has ruled that Hungary's reduced retirement age for judges constitutes unjustified discrimination on the grounds of age.
The European Commission had taken Hungary to court over its reduction of the retirement age for judges to 62. The Commission has questioned whether the government of Hungary is respecting the independence of the judiciary, as required by EU law.
The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled against Hungary on Tuesday. It says the measure is not necessary.
The court also says the sudden change left current judges without time to plan their retirements.
