Ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on Saturday night, last year's UK act Mae Muller has said more needs to be done to help competitors with their mental health. The singer said she has been avoiding this year's contest for the sake of her own health.

Muller represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2023, which was held in Liverpool after Ukraine was forced to pull out of hosting. She finished second-last with her track I Wrote a Song, earning just 24 points.

Responding to a fan who asked why the 26-year-old hasn't been keeping up with this year's contest, Muller tweeted that "the pressure is just too much".

She added: "It's a shame cos i luv performing and i luv music but the fans were the only thing that made it enjoyable. More needs to be done to protect the artist’s mental health because it’s not actually normal what they go through."

In a previous tweet, Muller wrote that she had "not been keeping up with EV at all this year for my own mental health".

Muller announced in January that she would be taking a break from the music industry after going through "the most intense year of my life" with Eurovision and her increased public profile in the wake of the contest.

She said: "It's been emotional, exciting and at times scary but to grow you have to be uncomfortable and when you're not happy where you are you need to make a change, which is what I've been doing behind the scenes."

Olly Alexander is representing the UK at the 2024 event, with his song Dizzy up there with the most exciting performances to watch when the grand final airs.

However, there is controversy surrounding this year's song contest. Some campaigners have called for a Eurovision boycott in response to Israeli singer Eden Golan's presence in the competition against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Viewers watching the Eurovision semi-finals even claimed that anti-booing technology might have been used during Golan's performance and there have been anti-Israel protests in the host country of Sweden.
