European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supports the proposal by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to establish a joint Air Defense Shield in Europe, Bloomberg reported on May 23.

The EU needs a new "flagship program" such as the European Air Defense Shield, Greek and Polish PMs wrote in a letter on May 23, Bloomberg quoted a source familiar with the letter content as saying.

Von der Leyen endorsed the idea in her post on the X social network.

"Ukraine is waging a war for freedom against oppression,”she wrote.

“Ukraine fights for our values. So let's keep supporting Ukraine and ramp up our defense at the same time. We need less fragmentation and more joint projects. Like an air defense shield proposed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Donald Tusk."

Both leaders were also asking to discuss the issue at the next EU summit at the end of June, Bloomberg added.

Mitsotakis raised the idea of a specific European defense initiative during a meeting with Tusk in Poland in April, a Greek government spokesperson told Bloomberg, and also confirmed the letter content.
