NEW YORK (AP) -- The euro rose against the dollar Thursday after Spain was able to successfully sell nearly $6 billion in bonds.

The euro rose to $1.3384 in late trading from $1.3286 late Wednesday.

The dollar was mixed against other major currencies after the U.S. released strong housing and jobs reports.

The Commerce Department said builders started work on homes in December at the fastest pace since the summer of 2008.

The Labor Department reported that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell to a five-year low last week.

The British pound rose to $1.6007 from $1.6003.

The dollar fell to 98.52 Canadian cents from 98.60 Canadian cents

The dollar rose to 89.97 Japanese yen from 88.49 yen and to 0.9328 Swiss franc from 0.9318 Swiss franc.
