Estes Park Aerial Tramway to reopen under new ownership

DENVER (KDVR) — The historic Estes Park Aerial Tramway has been closed for a couple of years, but it’s reopening under new ownership this spring.

The tramway, built by engineering pioneer Robert Heron, first opened in July 1955. Since then, it has safely transported over 3 million visitors to the summit of Prospect Mountain, according to a release from the new owners.

When Robert died in 1999, his son John Heron moved to Estes Park to continue the family business. John died in 2022, and the family posted on the tramway’s Facebook page saying they could no longer operate it as a family business.

“This decision did not come easily. We would like to see the heritage of the Tramway continue and we are open to all interested parties and ideas,” the family posted.

Gondola Ventures, LLC purchased the tramway from the family and said it is “committed to revitalizing this iconic attraction while honoring its rich history and heritage.”

The revitalizing process began with property upgrades this week, according to the release. Those upgrades include:

  • Repaved and restriped parking lot

  • Exterior and interior architectural improvements

  • Signage

  • Accessibility improvements

The iconic fire engine red tram cabins will continue operating, according to the release.

“Our goal is to blend the tramway’s storied past with modern enhancements that will elevate the guest experience,” long-time general manager Adrian Liddell said.

The tram takes visitors to a viewing platform at the top of Prospect Mountain, “offering unparalleled views of the Rocky Mountains and Continental Divide,” GVC said.

The attraction also includes a café and a gift shop.

The grand reopening is scheduled for May 25. There is a new online ticketing system with timed entry, and those interested can sign up to be notified when tickets go on sale.
