Escambia County students honored for ‘their resilience in the face of adversity’

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Fifty-four Escambia County students were recognized on Monday for overcoming extreme hardships.

Cox Communications and the Escambia County Council on PTAs/PTSAs hosted Monday their annual Cox Inspiration Hero Awards and EECPTAs/PTSAs Students of the Year Awards.

The ceremony was held at the University of West Florida Conference Center.

“It’s always an honor for us at Cox to applaud these students and celebrate what an inspiration they are to their peers and school staff,” Cox Gulf Coast market vice president David Deliman said. “They’ve overcome so many hardships in their young lives and still maintain a positive attitude. They’re true heroes and deserve their time in the spotlight.”

Each student was selected by a committee of school leaders at their respective schools for overcoming hardships such as the loss of a family member, medical issue, difficult family situation or another hardship.

“The Escambia County Council of PTAs/PTSAs recognizes students who have, in many cases, overcome tremendous challenges while maintaining a positive attitude,” ECCPTA President Jennifer Harrison said. “It’s our honor to recognize students who’ve seen significant improvement in various areas such as study habits, classroom behavior, interpersonal skills, or achievement of a specific academic or other relevant goal while overcoming a personal or family hardship or challenge.”

Cox presented students with personalized engraved medallions and a certificate of honor. ECCPTAs and PTSAs presented students with a certificate, an annual Splash City Adventures pass and a medallion courtesy of Baptist Health Care.

“We’re proud to partner with Cox Communications and the Escambia County Council of PTAs to recognize these inspiring students,” Escambia County Public Schools Superintendent Keith Leonard said. “Escambia County Public Schools is so grateful for our long-standing partnerships with Cox Communications and the PTAs, and the positive impact these partnerships have had in this community.”

Students also received certificates of accomplishment from United States Senator Rick Scott, United States Representative Matt Gaetz, Florida State Senator Doug Broxson, and Florida State Representatives Michelle Salzman and Alex Andrade.

The Escambia County Commission presented a proclamation at the event to congratulate the student honorees.
