Escambia County sheriff to party-goers: Review your camera rolls for clues in triple homicide

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons is calling Sunday morning’s triple homicide a needless tragedy and said he believes the shooting was a targeted ambush.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened early Sunday morning at a party at an event center near 65th Avenue and Jackson Street.

The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Markeese Turner, 28-year-old Michael Carstarphen and 23-year-old Trashawn Powers.

The sheriff’s office said the three were sitting in a convertible parked near the party when investigators believe two people fired shots into their vehicle.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said. “You don’t want to get a phone call saying something has happened to your child, and you certainly don’t want to get a phone call saying something this tragic has taken place and this needless has taken place.”

The sheriff believes the shooting may have been retaliation for a past incident.

“This is not random this was not a drive-by,” Simmons said. “This is a shooting that took place at close range, and it clearly was targeted.”

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information to come forward.

“Someone knows something because they were either at the party; they heard something; they saw something; they took a picture; they took a video,” Simmons said. “Please review that and if it’s something useful for us, please let us know because that’s the only way we can continue to investigate this case the way it deserves to be investigated.”

The sheriff’s office also activated its Real Time Crime Center in the investigation.
