ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office joined law enforcement agencies nationwide to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty during National Police Week.

The Sheriff’s Office held a memorial ceremony at its headquarters Wednesday morning, which also happens to be Peace Officer Memorial Day.

The day and week offer “honor, remembrance, and peer support while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty,” according to Police Week’s website.

During the ceremony, roses were placed on a memorial that lists the names of deputies who’ve died.

According to Escambia Sheriff Chip Simmons, the ceremony ensures those who sacrificed their lives to protect the community are not forgotten.

“We do this because there was a family member back in the day that got a phone call or got a knock on the door and told them that their loved one was not coming home,” Sheriff Simmons said.

“I think it’s important for the families to know that their names have not been forgotten.”

The sheriff’s office also honored two K9s during the ceremony.
