A news release from the county said Owen had worked for the county for almost 25 years as an equipment operator III for the Public Works Department.

Coworkers of Owens said he took great pride in his job.

“He would often arrive at work as early as 3:30 a.m. to ensure that he had time to enjoy his morning coffee and get ready for the workday, including starting up his coworkers’ computers and making sure their vehicles and keys were ready to go,” according to the release.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office previously said their deputies were called to Detroit Boulevard and Cove Avenue around 9 a.m. Monday.

Deputies discovered that workers were cutting a tree when the tree swung and struck the boom arm of one of the trucks. Owen was knocked from the bucket to the ground and EMS pronounced him dead.

A visitation for Owen will be held on March 7 from 11 a.m. to noon at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home.
