ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Erwin Police Department was established in 1891 and is still making historical strides.

Just six weeks ago, Roger Antone was hired as the first Black police officer there, and he says he is enjoying his new job.

“I love it,” Antone said. “I’m glad I made the move over here.”

Antone was also the first Black K9 officer hired in Bluff City years ago. But he wants to be remembered for more than just those firsts.

“I’m trying to make my own path and prove to my kids and the younger generation and anyone else that you have to create your own path and walk by faith. I remember Dr. King, in his speech he said he’d rather his kids be judged by their character than the color of their skin and that’s where I’m at,” he said.

Antone would say this new job has been a high point in his career but admits he’s had some low points as well, having experienced many ups and downs in life. He says he wants to use his life experiences to mentor area kids with some great advice.

“Your path to success is not going to be straight. You’re going to have bumps and curves and hula loops but stay on the right path and keep your mind focused and no matter who or what tells you no, don’t take no for an answer,” Antone says.

Antone is one of 17 officers in Erwin.

Chief Regan Tilson said Antone has “done a phenomenal job.”

“He’s a good cop and that’s what we need,” Tilson said.
