An Oklahoma woman has pleaded guilty in federal court this week to involuntary manslaughter for the accidental shooting death of her daughter, officials said.

Amanda Myrene Fields Moffett, 43, was convicted in Indian country for shooting and killing her 16-year-old daughter five years ago while attempting to shoot a stray dog, the U.S Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma announced in a press release Monday.

On Oct. 5, 2018, Moffett’s daughter told her that a stray dog was attacking kittens outside their home, according to the release. Moffett, a Cherokee citizen of Nowata, then stepped out onto her front porch with a handgun after sunset and shot into the dark yard at what she believed was the stray dog.

Moffett also admitted that she did not make sure her daughter was out of harm's way, the release states.

“Every gun owner has the legal responsibility to use extreme caution when discharging a firearm,” U.S. Attorney Clinton Johnson said. “This case unfortunately highlights the potential tragic results absent that caution.”

A sentencing date for Moffett has not been set. Officials say she faces a maximum of 8 years in federal prison.
