The 'Sex Education' Series Finale is Messy and Bittersweet

Being a horny teenager is messy, but so is trying to end a popular TV series. By Season Four of Sex Education, it was clear that the sex-positive comedy was already struggling with finding new things for our characters to do. At the end of Season Three, the Moordale students lost their school, everyone's plots were wrapped up in a little bow, and many cast members announced that they were moving on to other projects.
Still, a fourth season means that the true ending of Sex Education is finally here. What happens to Otis, Maeve, Eric, and our other favorite Moordale students? Follow along below to find out how it all ends. As always, there are major spoilers below for anyone who hasn't finished Season Four.
Do Otis and Maeve End Up Together?
No, actually, but that may be for the best. With Maeve (Emma Mackey) going to writing classes in America, Otis (Asa Butterfield) spends much of Season Four in a feud with another sex therapist at his new school, Cavendish. She goes by "O" (Thaddea Graham), and she already has a massive following by the time Otis arrives.
Throughout the season, Otis and Maeve also get into two major conflicts. He becomes jealous of Maeve's new friends in the US and he sleeps in the same bed with his ex-girlfriend, Ruby (Mimi Keene). In Episode Seven, Maeve decides to return to her studies in America and the pair agree to break up. Otis also gives up his sex therapy clinic to O after discovering how much more it means to her. In the end, Maeve receives an internship for her book, "Southchester," after telling off her rude teacher (Dan Levy). She then writes Otis a heartfelt letter explaining that she'll always thank him for teaching her to trust people again.
Who Is Joy's Real Father?
After accepting help and struggling with postpartum depression, Otis's mom, Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson), starts a sex therapy radio show. The biggest reveal, however, is that Dan (Daniel Ings) is Joy's real father. Fans may remember him as the motorcycle-riding fling back from Season One—who also made an appearance in Season Three right before Jean and Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt) end their relationship. I guess Jakob was right?!
What About Eric?
After agreeing to get baptized by his church—despite his conflicting relationship with the institution over their not-so-welcoming views on the gay community—Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) eventually forms a new relationship with God (played by Jodie Turner-Smith). After coming out, Eric's pastor apologizes and seeks out his advice to help make the church a more welcoming space. Eric then decides that he wants to become an inclusive pastor for the community.
Where Does the Rest of the Cast End Up?
For those who returned after Season Three, many characters find solace. Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) reconnects with his father and finds joy in horse training. Ruby gets in the popular crowd at Cavendish after confronting her childhood bully. Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) learns how to process her trauma through art and also makes a romantic connection with Isaac (George Robinson). Jackson Marchetti (Kedar Williams-Sterling) learns about his true parentage, eventually forgiving his moms for keeping it a secret. Also, Viv Odusanya (Chineye Ezeudu) leaves her abusive and controlling new boyfriend Beau (Reda Elazouar).
Outside of Otis and Maeve's ending, the major season finale event is when Cal (Dua Saleh) runs away from home—causing the whole school to search for them. Eric and Jackson eventually find Cal on a cliff, where they look like they are considering taking their life. Talking Cal down, the school later announces that they will use the fundraiser to help pay for Cal's top surgery.
Will There Be a Season Five?
Sorry, but probably not. Many cast members from Sex Education never returned for Season Four, and even those few remaining are already taking on bigger projects. Ncuti Gatwa was announced as the next Doctor Who and Simone Ashley starred in Bridgerton. Plus, Mackey, Gatwa, and Swindells all recently appeared in the latest billion-dollar summer blockbuster, Barbie. Sex Education creator and writer Laurie Nunn also announced in an open letter that Season Four would mark the end of the series, thanking her fans and stating, "it became clear that this was the right time to graduate."
