Netflix Released the First Trailer for its Ayrton Senna Miniseries

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's untimely death, Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming scripted miniseries following the life and career of one of Formula 1's greatest drivers.

The two-minute trailer begins with Gabriel Leone as Senna preparing for the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix. Leone sits inside Senna's McLaren MP4/6, which the famed driver would pilot toward his inaugural win at his home Grand Prix and on to his third world championship in the 1991 season.

As the trailer continues, clips from Senna's childhood flash across the screen as reflections cast onto his visor. As he laps the Interlagos circuit, we see clips of a younger Senna imagining himself as a championship-winning driver. The brief trailer ends with an emotional Senna crossing the line to win his home Grand Prix for the first time—a feat, we will remind you, he managed with his car stuck in sixth gear.

According to Netflix, the series will begin with Senna's racing career as he moved to England to race in the Formula Ford championship, and it ends with his tragic death at Imola in 1994. If the trailer and press photos are any indication, Senna's volatile relationship with his rival and part-time teammate Alain Prost will be a core focus of the story.

According to Netflix, other Formula 1 legends including Nelson Piquet, James Hunt, and Niki Lauda will be portrayed throughout the series. Leone, who portrays Senna, is a fellow Brazilian who recently played Alfonso de Portago in Michael Mann's Ferrari.

Netflix hasn't revealed the official release date for the series, but the streaming giant did confirm it will be later this year.
