Perry's performance as Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom skyrocketed him to fame and earned him an Emmy nomination

The show that shot Matthew Perry to fame is remembering the actor in a special way.

Each Friends season streaming on Max now begins with a tribute to the late actor. “In Memory of Matthew Perry,” the title card reads, aside a headshot of the actor. It also lists the years he was born and died: 1969–2023.

Perry was found dead Saturday of an apparent drowning at his Los Angeles home at age 54. No drugs were found at the scene, and no foul play was suspected, according to law enforcement.

Co-creators of the sitcom Marta Kauffman and David Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright issued a joint statement to PEOPLE on Sunday that praised Perry both on and off screen.

“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing,” they wrote. “It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent.”

The statement continued, “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment — not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”
