Jodie Foster Reacts to Oscars Joke About Being '20 Years Too Old' to Be Former Costar Robert De Niro's Girlfriend

De Niro, 80, attended the show with his 45-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany Chen on Sunday night

Jimmy Kimmel threw a joke Robert De Niro’s way during his 2024 Oscars monologue — and it had to do with his girlfriend's age.

Kimmel reminded the audience of the Killers of the Flower Moon actor's classic 1976 film Taxi Driver, which also starred a 12-year-old Jodie Foster.

“Here’s some fun Oscar trivia: 48 years ago, Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster were nominated for Taxi Driver, and they’re both nominated again tonight. 1976 was the year,” Kimmel said.

The host then joked, “In 1976, Jodie Foster was young enough to be Robert De Niro’s daughter. Now, she’s 20 years too old to be his girlfriend."

Foster, 61, got in on the joke with a playful nod of the head — seemingly affirming that she agreed with Kimmel's crack about the 80-year-old Hollywood icon. She even mouthed, “It’s true.” De Niro had a laugh at the joke, too, throwing his head back with amusement.

De Niro — who was nominated for best actor in a supporting role on Sunday night — is in a relationship with 45-year-old Tiffany Chen. They welcomed a baby girl named Gia Virginia in April 2023. Chen walked the Oscars carpet with De Niro ahead of the ceremony on Sunday.

Once inside the venue, Foster and De Niro shared a hug and kiss on the cheek.

“He called my mom about the part, and she thought he was crazy,” Foster previously told Vanity Fair about De Niro’s role in her Taxi Driver casting. “But I went in to meet him for an interview. My mom thought, with my school uniform on, there was no way he’d think I was right for it. But he said yes, and she trusted him.”

Foster was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Nyad during the 2024 awards.
