Ga. Teen, 14, with a Gun Led Cops on a Car Chase Before Surrendering: ‘He Was Going Across People’s Yards’

Police said the teen was armed with a "loaded" AR-14 pistol that "had a high capacity magazine"

A 14-year-old Georgia teenager is facing theft and firearms charges after police say he stole a car using a gun and led officers on a car chase.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said in a press release on social media that the teenage boy — who has not been identified — will be charged with theft by receiving, fleeing, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a minor for the incident that occurred earlier this month.

The sheriff’s office said in an initial post that officers had been on the lookout for a silver Honda Civic that had been carjacked at gunpoint in nearby Dekalb County. Officers eventually spotted the car at the intersection of HWY 85 South and Stonewall Avenue, and when they tried to initiate a “felony stop,” the car took off.

Officers from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and City of Fayetteville Public Safety pursued the car, which “crashed into road signs, mailboxes and another vehicle," police said. In the dashcam video provided by police, the car could be seen speeding up on a highway before swerving into a neighborhood.

The driver could also be seen in the police footage driving vertically in order to try to escape police. A bystander, Glenn Poton, described the car chase to Atlanta’s WSB-TV as “intense.”

“He was going across people’s yards,” Poton recalled. “I was shocked, totally shocked. [The car] could have hit another vehicle, people walking around with dogs, animals [and] kids. It could have been a real problem.”

The teen eventually pulled the car on the side of a highway and got out “with a gun” in his hand, but police said he “decided to surrender when he realized he was surrounded.”

Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb told Fox 5 Atlanta that the teen had been armed with an AR-14 pistol, which is “a semi-automatic.”

"This one had a high-capacity magazine, and it was loaded," he added.

The teenager — who had been a student at DeKalb Middle School, per Fox 5 Atlanta — also faces multiple charges in Dekalb County, police said.
