Entergy applies for grants to make electric system in Baton Rouge, Reserve faster

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Entergy Louisiana filed two grant applications on Thursday, April 18. If approved, they would secure about $240 million and use it to strengthen parts of the company’s electric system in Baton Rouge and Reserve.

The two proposed Line Hardening and Microgrid projects would make recovery faster after storms. They would reduce impacts to customers and local economies. And, they would make communities more resilient, Entergy said in a news release.

The funding opportunities Entergy is pursuing come from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. They are from the U.S. Department of Energy’s GRIP (Grid Resilience and Innovative Partnerships) program. Entergy said the agency is expected to announce awards this fall. Winning submissions will get funding for half the project’s cost.

“This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to enhancing the resilience of our power grid while simultaneously investing in the communities we serve,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “Through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, we are not only safeguarding our infrastructure against future challenges but also empowering our state to thrive.”

The projects involve hardening grid infrastructure and microgrid parts. They also involve improving grid resilience for disadvantaged communities. Any federal grants received would benefit customers, Entergy said.
