New England’s head coach Bill Belichick has refused to stay idle as the quarterback questions arise. Rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett made his debut Sunday afternoon against the Miami Dolphins after lead quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was taken out of the game after sustaining an injury to his AC joint. Brissett kept poise through the game, but the fact still remains that he is still a rookie.

The Patriots are a veteran powerhouse team and they always have more than one trick up their sleeves. Since Monday, wide receiver Julian Edelman has been practicing as a quarterback to back up Jacoby Brissett in the game on Thursday night against the Houston Texans.

Edelman is in a unique position having the ability to step in as a backup quarterback. During his college career at Kent State, Edelman was famously known as a quarterback. However, when he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft, New England turned him into one of the most proficient wide receivers in the NFL.

There is pressure being put on Garoppolo to play on Thursday even if he is only backup to Brissett. As of right now, Garoppolo is doubtful to play. He is still in extreme pain which puts New England in an unfortunate position. There needs to be some form of structure behind Brissett because his familiarity with the passing offense is still at a minimum. As seen on Sunday, Jacoby Brissett relied heavily on handing the ball to running back LeGarrette Blount. The Pats’ running game isn’t strong enough to sustain that level of predictability.

Although Houston hasn’t typically fared well in New England, anything is possible with the Pats starting a rookie. All that fans can do is cross their fingers and believe that, no matter what, New England has the capability to pull off a third straight win.
