England football legend Paul Gascoigne 'arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on a train'

England football legend Paul Gascoigne has been quizzed by police on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman on a train.

The 51-year-old former midfielder was held by police at Durham railway station following allegations a woman was touched inappropriately on a CrossCountry service from York.

Gascoigne was released pending further enquiries while an appeal has been made for witnesses to the incident, which occurred last week, with any information to come forward.

A police spokesman told The Sun last night: “Officers were called to Durham station at 6.45pm on Monday following reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted on board a CrossCountry train from York.

“A 51-year-old man from Gateshead has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault by touching.

“He has been released under investigation. Officers are continuing to make inquiries.”

The ex-Tottenham, Rangers and Newcastle man has been battling alcohol addiction for a number of years now.

Hopes had been raised that the troubled star had overcome his problems after starting a new relationship with 49-year-old divorcee Sara Lovatt.

He has been staying in a South Leicestershire village near to her home.

However, Gascoigne’s problems remerged earlier this month when was found naked in a communal area and then cut short a television appearance on Soccer AM.

Gazza, as he is affectionally known to the football world, blamed sleeping tablets on his early departure from the Sky Sports show and told concerned fans he was unwell.

Gascoigne was widely regarded as one of the most gifted players of his generation and played 51 times for England during his career.
