Emporia commissioners to make decision on Quaker Park

EMPORIA (KSNT) – A petition to save a city park in Emporia is prompting local leaders to take action Tuesday.

The City of Emporia announced in a press release that it has reviewed the signatures attached to a petition to save Quaker Park. Locals rallied to save the park after learning the city planned to sell the property for new housing development.

More than 800 signatures were collected on the petition with just over 590 being deemed sufficient. A little over 40 signatures were thrown out on grounds they did not meet requirements for the petition.

Emporia’s city attorney will now prepare a resolution to remove Quaker Park from the surplus property list. This resolution will appear before city commissioners on Wednesday, May 1. If approved, the resolution will halt further development of Quaker Park with no need for a public vote.

“We want to thank the Save the Quaker Park Committee for their dedication and time spent on this matter. We’re excited to team up with the community members behind the petition to make Quaker Park even better for everyone in the community.”
