The new, just-released Season 3 trailer above offers a sneak peek at the pop diva’s character and she looks, sounds and dresses a lot like, well, Mariah Carey. Technically, however, Carey will be playing “Kitty,” a mega-superstar who helps Jamal dig deep to overcome personal difficulties and reach a musical breakthrough. (We suspect/hope the person Kitty’s seen throwing shade at early in the clip is Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie.)

Strangely, the 60-second promo does not feature any footage of the season’s other big guest star, Taye Diggs, whose character is coming in as a potential love interest for Cookie. “His story is all about Cookie,” exec producer Ilene Chaiken confirmed earlier this month at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “It starts as a Jamal story and then intersects [with Cookie].”
Empire returns Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9/8c on Fox. Carey’s episode airs Oct. 5.
