Emmerdale star Paula Lane has revealed she auditioned for three different parts on the ITV soap before eventually landing the role of Ella Forster.

The actress, who previously played Kylie Platt on Coronation Street from 2010 to 2016, made her on-screen debut as newcomer Ella earlier this year.

However, Lane has now revealed that she originally auditioned for the role of Dingle family member Gennie Walker over 15 years ago.

"When I was just starting out, my very first audition was for the part of Gennie Dingle, so it’s come full circle," she told The Mirror.

"I was still at drama school at the time – I hadn’t even finished my training – and I wrote a letter to them, including a picture.

"I said I was from Yorkshire, that I was training as an actor and that I loved the show and would love to work there. I auditioned to play Gennie and, unfortunately, I didn't get the part, but then later I went up for a few more roles."

After the role of Glennie went to Sian Reese-Williams, Lane went on to audition to play Holly Barton (a role which eventually went to Sophie Powles) and another, minor role.

"I was up for Holly Barton – I was screen-tested for that and got down to the last four – and I then auditioned for another part as a lawyer," she explained.

Lane's time in the Dales eventually came, though, after she invited the soap's casting team to come and watch her in a stage production of JM Barrie's Quality Street last year.

"Afterwards they got in touch to say they wanted to meet me for the part of Ella. I was extremely flattered," she shared.

"Now, when I'm there filming in the village, I think – 'oh my gosh, this is just the right fit for me'.

"Emmerdale has always been there and at this time in my life it feels very welcome. It’s exactly where I feel I should be right now."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
