Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Kevin Mathurin has predicted that his character Charles Anderson may face some angry backlash from villagers.

Earlier this week, Charles' son Ethan was involved in a serious car accident with Nicky Milligan in the passenger seat.

The pair both lost consciousness – after he woke up, Ethan fled the scene as he was worried about being over the legal alcohol limit.

The aftermath sees Nicky fighting for his life.

With Ethan acting suspiciously, Charles coaxes the information out of his son, before reporting him to the police.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press about the repercussions of Charles' difficult decision, Mathurin explained: "I haven't really come across any of those scenes yet, but I think, as per usual, the village turns against him. At the end of the day, Nicky is the victim.

"It's not about whether Charles has done the right thing of calling the police on his son or not, it's more about Nicky and that Ethan has committed the crime. They'll judge the family on that."

On the Dingles' reaction to Ethan's wrongdoing, Mathurin added: "Charles is used to having to deal with the Dingles. He's had a bit of a clash with one or two members in the past. I think he's just wanting to do the right thing."

The actor went on to reveal that the accident has left the local vicar questioning his faith.

"Faith is really important to Charles. Yes, life is always testing him, but that's life in general, life tests everyone. Luckily, he's got his faith to rely on while some people don't have that," he said.

"But things do happen where he does think, 'Why me?' He thinks, 'I'll take things into my own hands and deal with it the way I want to deal with it as a man and a father'."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
