Emmerdale star Kevin Mathurin explains Charles' devastating new decision

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Kevin Mathurin has explained why his character Charles Anderson reports his son Ethan to the police next week.

The local vicar makes the difficult decision after learning that Ethan fled from the scene of a serious car accident involving Nicky Miligan.

In Thursday's episode (May 9), Ethan is driving Nicky to pick up Suni Sharma when they crash on the road and both lose consciousness.

Ethan wakes up and pulls Nicky from the vehicle. When Ethan then sees Moira Dingle approaching, he decides to run off as he's worried about the possibility that he's over the legal alcohol limit.

The aftermath sees Nicky fight for his life in hospital, while Ethan starts to raise suspicion with his obvious feelings of guilt.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press about how Charles finds out the truth, Kevin explained: "Charles knows his son really well and he knows something isn't right.

"At first, Charles thinks that Ethan is really nervous about his new job. It's an amazing job that's coming up for him and he's been out of work for a while. Charles is just happy that his son has landed on his feet and wants the best for him.

"But it's more than nerves – there's something rattling Ethan and he can't quite figure it out. He coaxes it out of him and eventually he finds out what's really going on."

Asked why Charles then goes to the police, Kevin replied: "There's always that battle between 'Charles the vicar' and 'Charles the man and father'. He wants to do right by his son, obviously. But righteously, the right thing is to own up and face the consequences.

"Charles will support Ethan no matter what happens. You can't take your own wheel, sometimes you've got to hand God the wheel and see what happens.

"I think every parent will understand what Charles is going through, or it'll be a debate on 'what I'd do as a parent'.

"I think it'll bring up that conversation – would you want to do the right thing and live with that? Or would you keep that secret and get yourself involved as well and be complicit to the wrongdoings?"

Kevin added that Charles will also naturally be thinking about the village's other recent road disaster, which saw Heath Hope lose his life amid a New Year joyride.

In that scenario, Heath's father Bob spent weeks unaware that Angelica King had been driving the car at the time of the crash.

Kevin said: "Of course it's a similar circumstance. It's awful for parents to not know the full details of why their son is in hospital – or whatever the condition is that Nicky ends up in.

"Charles, as the vicar in the village, wants to do the right thing and support them and be supportive of Ethan. Hopefully things will work out. Sometimes you've got to deal with the consequences."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
