Emeryville Target closes all self-checkout lanes

EMERYVILLE, Calif. (KRON) — Self-checkout lanes are a thing of the past at the popular Target store in Emeryville.

On Thursday afternoon, all of the self-checkout lanes were closed at the store located at 1555 40th St. Half of the regular checkout lanes were open and staffed with employees.

KRON4 is awaiting a response from Target to see when and why exactly the lanes were closed, but KRON4 employees who frequent the store say they have been closed for several weeks.

Entrances to the self-checkout section store were cordoned off. A sign read, “Express self-checkout is currently closed. Team members nearby are ready to help you checkout.”

Shoppers at the store noticed that lines are longer now that self-checkout is not available. Jennifer Mendez, who was at the store on Wednesday, says her shopping experience is more complicated without self-checkout lanes available.

“Usually when I go into Target or another store, if there is no self-checkout, it’s harder for me with two toddlers under 5,” she said.

There are currently no Target locations in Oakland, making this store the closest Target for many in the East Bay. Other nearby Target stores are in Alameda, Berkeley and Albany.

KRON4 reached out to Target for more information on closing the lanes and is awaiting a response.
