SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The extension of the Emergency Temporary Lodging Program comes amid criticism from County Supervisor, Jim Desmond.

The program provides lodging to families who had their homes damaged in the Jan. 22, 2024 storm that caused major flooding in the county.

In an unanimous vote, the county has approved the voucher program for another six weeks. It was set to expire next week. Now, temporary lodging will continue through June 21, 2024.

The extension will cost another $9 million in the county’s general reserve funds, plus another $5.1 million approved by the supervisors Tuesday.

Desmond made the following statement on the matter:

“Once again, the county is providing those under City of San Diego responsibility essential support and resources, while the city sits back and provides minimal services from it $5 billion budget. The County has now allocated approximately $30 million to address the aftermath of city’s ineptness, providing food and shelters to those affected. The lack of a long-term plan for the January floods is simply unacceptable.”
