Emanuel, Quinn close to a deal for Chicago casino
CHICAGO (AP) — Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn are "very close" to a deal for a Chicago casino.
Quinn says an agreement could come together by Jan. 9, when new members of the General Assembly will be sworn in to office.
Lawmakers approved legislation earlier this year that would bring casinos to Chicago and four other areas.
Quinn vetoed the bill, saying it didn't include enough ethics protections. The governor also said he wanted money from the gambling expansion to go to education.
Lawmakers considered trying to override the veto this week. They now say their efforts are focused on coming up with a new agreement that Quinn will be willing to sign.
Quinn said he and Emanuel have had several meetings and are working on any remaining differences.
