Elwood man charged with battery with a deadly weapon

May 20—ANDERSON — Jeffrey A. Morris, 55, Elwood, was arrested Sunday by Elwood police on charges of burglary, domestic battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation with a deadly weapon and domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury.

Elwood police were dispatched to the 1200 block of East 25th Street after a call that someone was hitting a door with a hatchet.

A woman said she was in her bedroom when Morris broke the door apart and hit her in the forehead with a piece of the broken door.

Morris allegedly used the hatchet to break into another apartment.

He told police that the woman hit her head on the door intentionally, and he claimed the hatchet marks on the door were several years old.

Officer Marus Shoppell said he had been to the apartment and never saw any gashes on the door.

Morris said he knocked on the door with the hatchet so he wouldn't hurt his hand.
