Eloy Gutierrez-Menoyo, Cuban rebel commander turned dissident, dies

HAVANA - The wife of Eloy Gutierrez-Menoyo says the one-time Cuban rebel commander turned dissident has died. He was 77.

Gutierrez-Menoyo fought alongside Fidel Castro, but ultimately lost faith in the revolution and became a foe launching commando raids against the island. He was imprisoned and exiled, but later came back to Cuba where he became a moderate, pro-dialogue dissident.

His wife Flor Ester Torres Sanabria told The Associated Press that Gutierrez-Menoyo died at a Havana hospital after suffering a heart attack.
