Elmira Heights CSD to build bus garage, upgrade facilities

ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y. (WETM) — The Elmira Heights Central School District will be building its own transportation facility and making upgrades to its school buildings.

The school district can undertake new construction projects because the Elmira Heights community voted in favor of its capital improvement project, which the district says will allow it to make essential upgrades and enhancements at its facilities. Thirty residents voted against the project, and 149 voted for it.

“This is a significant milestone for our district, and we are immensely grateful to the community for their unwavering support,” said Superintendent Michael Gill. “These vital upgrades will not only enhance the learning environment for our students but also reinforce our commitment to providing a safe, modern, and inclusive educational experience.”

According to the Elmira Heights CSD, it needs to build a transportation facility because the Horseheads Central School District is ending its long-standing agreement to house and maintain Heights buses in June 2026. The Elmira Heights CSD expects that having its own bus garage will streamline transportation operations, enhance efficiency, and ensure safety and comfort for students and staff.

The school district also plans to make improvements to Thomas A. Edison High School, Cohen Elementary School, and Cohen Middle School. The district will replace windows and do roof repairs at Edison and Cohen. These renovations are expected to increase energy efficiency, reduce future maintenance costs, and improve the appearance of both buildings. The elementary school’s office will also be updated with new security features. If there are remaining funds in the budget, Edison’s library and media center will be upgraded.

The Elmira Heights CSD will be posting updates about the upcoming projects on its website.
