Elmira College women’s wrestling sends three to NCWWC Nationals

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Three Elmira College women’s wrestlers will have a chance to win a national title.

Following a successful Saturday at the NCWWC Northeast Region 1 Championships, Elmira College women’s wrestling will have a shot to crown three national champions. The 22nd ranked Soaring Eagles finished their trip to Regionals in Lock Haven, with 3 national qualifiers, 6 regional placers, and a 4th place team result. Standout freshman Zoey Lints added her name to the program’s record books, becoming the 2nd women’s wrestler (since Skylah Chakouian) to win a regional title. Lints claimed the 143 pound crown with 2 pinfall victories, a tech fall, and a 5-4 decision. The freshman defeated Sacred Heart’s Khadijah Sanusi for the title.

At 155 pounds, Skylah Chakouian earned her 1st trip back to nationals since the 2021-22 season. The standout junior recorded a 5-3 decision victory over Sacred Heart’s Tayla Tildsley to reach the final and claim a ticket to Iowa. Chakouian fell in the final to Sacred Heart’s Madison Sandquist. Despite the loss, Chakouian adds to a great career with the Soaring Eagles, finishing top-3 in regionals for the 3rd consecutive season, and reaching nationals for a 2nd time.

At 109 pounds, EC’s Abby Duke punched a ticket to nationals with a runner up finish. Duke notched 2 decisive wins over Sacred Heart’s Ahsia Torres to reach the final. Kaelani Shufeldt of Lock Haven defeated Duke for the title, but not before the sophomore claimed a ticket to Iowa.

In addition to the qualifying efforts, Elmira College placed with Tayana Labady (5th), Megan Edwards (6th), Gabby Bradigan (6th), Leslie Monterrosa (7th), Hazel Dahlquist (7th), Angelina Caban (8th).

Lints, Chakouian, and Duke will represent Elmira College at the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships, on March 8th and 9th in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
