Elmhurst police engage in 3-hour standoff after responding to reports of a knife attack inside Portillo’s restaurant

A man attacked his girlfriend inside a Portillo’s on the north side of the Elmhurst Crossing shopping mall, Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the Elmhurst Police Department.

The man and woman were part of a subcontracted cleaning crew working at the restaurant, located at 155 S. IL Route 83, Elmhurst.

Elmhurst police, alongside neighboring police agencies and DuPage County’s Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team, responded to a call around 5:30 a.m., after the victim and another woman working on the cleaning crew escaped the restaurant and alerted a passing motorist.

There, officers engaged in a nearly three-hour standoff with the 32-year-old man. According to police, officers entered the restaurant around 8:30 a.m., where they found the man lying on the lying floor from apparent self-inflicted wounds.

Paramedics later transported the man, in unknown condition, to a hospital. According to police, the victim showed evidence of assault and suffered minor injuries.

The Elmhurst Shopping Center, which had been closed during the incident, was reopened at 9:30 a.m., while the Portillo’s remained closed as evidence technicians investigate the scene.
