NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Nashville staple of the meat-and-three and “the best milkshakes in town” was recently recognized by state lawmakers for more than 80 years of service.

Rep. Kelly Keisling (R-Byrdstown) was on hand to present an official proclamation passed by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2023 recognizing the iconic midtown restaurant, Elliston Place Soda Shop, for its 83 years in business. This year, the restaurant is celebrating 84 years of service to Nashville.

Gov. Bill Lee signed House Joint Resolution 357 on March 13, 2023, according to the proclamation. It was brought forth by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including Reps. Harold Love (D-Nashville), Keisling, Dale Carr (R-Sevierville), Charlie Baum (R-Murfreesboro), Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby), Clemmons (D-Nashville), Hardaway (D-Memphis) and the late Bill Beck (D-Nashville), as well as Sens. Raumesh Akbari (D-Memphis), Heidi Campbell (D-Nashville), Charlane Oliver (D-Nashville) and Jeff Yarbro (D-Nashville).

The resolution states it is “fitting that the members of this General Assembly should commend those exemplary businesses that, through their unwavering commitment to excellence, are a credit to this State” and commends Elliston Place Soda Shop as a “beloved staple of Nashville” providing food for “generations of customers.”

“Elliston Place Soda Shop remains steadfastly committed to providing its legendary service and atmosphere to all who enter therein, including the long-standing tradition of bringing new mothers a milkshake from the shop,” the resolution reads in part.

The resolution concludes by congratulating Ellison Place Soda Shop on its 83rd anniversary in 2023 and “extends to them our best wishes for every continued success” in Nashville.

Keisling presented a framed copy of the proclamation to Elliston Place Soda Shop Owner Tony Girarratana and Manager Craig Clifft on Thursday, Feb. 29, inside the soda shop.

According to Keisling, Clifft told him about the shop’s successful 80th year, which inspired him and “about a half dozen” other lawmakers to act and celebrate.

“We looked at one another and said, ‘By golly, let’s do a Tennessee House Joint Resolution for Elliston,” Keisling said Thursday.

“Thank you for this great honor that you bestowed upon us ,” Giarratana told the lawmaker.

In addition to the best milkshakes in town, Keisling added that Elliston Place also has, in his opinion, the best breakfast in Nashville.
