Elizabeth River Ferry service suspended ‘until further notice’ due to issue near Norfolk dock

Commuters looking to travel between Norfolk and Portsmouth have had one less transit option available this week.

The Elizabeth River Ferry, which services three points between the two cities’ downtowns, was suspended Friday “until further notice.” Service remained suspended Tuesday, with printed signs taped up at ferry docks alerting customers to use shuttle service instead.

An undisclosed “issue” in a public right of way is limiting access to the dock in front of Waterside District in Norfolk, Thomas Becher, a spokesperson for Hampton Roads Transit, said Tuesday afternoon.

He did not provide further details, saying a service restoration plan will be available Wednesday.

Hampton Roads Transit offered a shuttle that matched the ferry schedule, departing every 30 minutes between Waterside District and Portsmouth until ferry service resumes.

Service to and from Harbor Park from the North Landing dock in Portsmouth was not affected. The ferries ran their regular schedules for Norfolk Tides games over the weekend.
