Elite HUR combat unit Kraken shows footage of ongoing Chasiv Yar battle

There are currently no Russian troops in Chasiv Yar, reported Kraken unit of Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate(HUR) on Telegram on May 7.

The statement explained that while Russian forces are attempting to advance from multiple directions, the Ukrainian military has managed to keep them out of the city.

"Soldiers are heroically holding the defense, destroying numerous enemies daily, burning enemy armored vehicles, and taking prisoners... it's the usual work of modern heroes," the statement read.

Soldiers also shared video footage from Chasiv Yar, which they've been defending for a month. The unit posted scenes of intense fighting, the evacuation of the wounded, and drone footage showcasing the devastated city.

Chasiv Yar clashes

In April, Ukrainian Commander-in-Cheif of Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky said that Russia's top military leadership had set a task for its soldiers to capture the town west of Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, by May 9. Enemy is concentrating its efforts to break through defenses and gain access to Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal to create conditions for further advancement to Kramatorsk agglomeration.

On April 10, Institute for the Study of War stated that in an attempt to make their way to Chasovyi Yar, Russians are resorting to tactics that helped them capture Avdiivka. The positions of Ukrainian defenders are being intensively shelled with anti-aircraft gunships and fire from airplanes and helicopters.

The Ukrainian military says that if the Russians succeed in capturing Chasiv Yar, they will launch an offensive against Kostyantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

On April 28, Syrsky confirmed that the situation at the front had escalated. Defense forces withdrew west of Berdychiv, Semenivka and Novomykhailivka.

On May 2, Oleg Kalashnikov, a spokesman for the 26th 'Roman Dashkevich' Artillery Brigade, said that Russians would not be able to capture Chasiv Yar by May 9, despite the fact that they had deployed all their resources.

At the same time, Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy head of HUR, believes that capture of Chasiv Yar by Russians is “only a matter of time.” He said this in an interview with The Economist published on May 2.

Spokesman for the Khortytsia Operational-Strategic Group of Troops, Nazar Voloshyn, said that as of May 3 Russian troops were continuing to try to capture Chasiv Yar in Donetsk Oblast. To do this, they are actively storming neighboring villages, but the occupiers are not in the town.

On May 5, Voloshyn said that the Russian army had concentrated up to 25,000 troops near Chasiv Yar.
