PLOVER – Portage County residents have another chance to drop off electronics and small appliances for recycling next month.

Portage County Solid Waste will host a recycling collection event from 8:30 a.m. to noon April 13 at the Portage County Transfer Facility at 600 Moore Road in Plover. Check out the details from Portage County Solid Waste before you make plans to drop off electronics.

How much does it cost?

The electronics and small appliance recycling event is not free, but with funding from electronics manufacturers, Portage County Waste is offering the event at a discounted rate. The cost will be $10 per vehicle. Event organizers ask people to bring in the exact change or have prewritten checks made out to PCSW or Portage County Solid Waste. The group will not accept credit or debit cards. Exact change will help keep traffic moving smoothly through the event.

Is there a limit?

There is a limit of 25 items per vehicle.

Who can drop off items for recycling?

This event is only for Portage County residents. Businesses of any size will be turned away.

Can I just show up?

No. Organizers are aiming to reduce traffic congestion and wait times for the event. All participants must register ahead of time, and all registrations must be in by midnight April 10. Appointment slots are offered every half hour starting at 8:30 a.m., and participants must arrive on time, no more than 15 minutes before their registered time.

How do I register?

Participants can register online at co.portage.wi.gov/activities or call 715-343-6297 to make an appointment to drop off electronics or small appliances.

Where do I go?

Signs will be posted for drivers to follow Portage County R and around the block to Black Oak Drive, Twin Towers Drive and then west onto Moore Road. Traffic off of Apache Drive will be rerouted.

What can I drop off?

People can drop off cable boxes, cables, cords, cameras, camcorders, cellphones, PDAs and chargers, clocks, coffee makers, copiers, printers, scanners and fax machines, desktop computer towers, docking stations, DVD, VHS and Blu-Ray players, all types of external drives, fans, hair dryers, landline phones, laptop computers and all types of monitors. Other recyclable items include MP3 and iPod players, microwaves, projectors, radios, satellite dishes and receivers, servers, stereos and speakers, toasters, all types of TVs, jump starters, vacuum cleaners, and video game consoles and controllers.

Are there items they won’t accept?

Batteries, ballasts, bulbs and lamps, capacitors, dehumidifiers, washing machines, dryers, gas cylinders, ink and toner cartridges, holiday lights, liquids, medical and radioactive wastes, medical and lab equipment, refrigerators, smoke detectors, stoves and vape pens will not be accepted at the recycling event.

Why are there registrations and restrictions?

Organizers held a free recycling event last October for Portage County residents with a limit of 20 items per vehicle, and the group saw unprecedented demand. That event collected between 18,000 and 20,000 pounds of materials from almost 500 vehicles in two and a half hours, but many people were turned away. Portage County held another electronics recycling event in December with participants pre-registering before the event. The group continues to adjust the event to better serve the community.

What if I miss this event but still have items to recycle?

The Portage County Transfer Facility accepts most of the recyclable items all year. The Transfer Facility does not accept asbestos, medical wastes, items like smoke alarms and exit signs that have radioactive materials, fire extinguishers or yard waste.

For a list of guidelines and recycling fees, visit co.portage.wi.gov/419/Transfer-Facility or call 715-343-6297.
