Electric scooters may be permitted on Chicago streets after midnight

CHICAGO — Members of a City Council committee on Wednesday endorsed an ordinance that would permit electric scooter rides overnight.

Currently, electrict scooters can be rented only between the hours of 5 a.m. and midnight.

The Committee on License and Consumer Protection advanced an amended ordinance that would eliminate those constraints.

E-scooter officials said it will offer more commuting options for people working overnight hours.

The ordinance would also adjust licensing fees, which officials estimate could bring the city over $3 million.
