Election 2024: Bernie Moreno wins Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Ohio primary election

Ohioans decided Tuesday which Republican will take on Democratic incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown in November.

Businessman Bernie Moreno won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in the Ohio primary election, the Associated Press declared.

“I am so grateful for the resounding support of Ohioans in all 88 counties,” said Moreno in a statement. “I thank Matt Dolan and Frank LaRose for a spirited primary contest. I look forward to uniting our party and working to send Sherrod Brown packing in November!”

The three nominees were State Senator Matt Dolan, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, and Moreno.

“I’m honored and humbled by the thousands of Ohioans who stood with me in this campaign. While this is not my time to serve as our party’s nominee for the United States Senate, I’m profoundly grateful for those who gave me their support,” LaRose said in a statement. “Now is the time to stand together as a party.”

He said that he spoke with Moreno and wished him well.

“We all share the same mission to retire Sherrod Brown and restore Ohio’s voice and values to the United States Senate. The stakes for this election couldn’t be higher.”

Moreno will face Brown in November as he seeks a fourth term in office.

Brown released a statement Tuesday night about the results.

“Ohioans know I have always stood by them to make sure their hard work pays off and will stand up to anyone who gets in the way. The choice ahead of Ohio is clear: Bernie Moreno has spent his career and campaign putting himself first and would do the same if elected. Elections come down to whose side you’re on, and I’ll always work for Ohio – from standing up to special interests taking advantage of Ohio workers and corporations raising costs for families to making sure our veterans get the healthcare they earned.”
