Eldora is on track for the longest ski season in its history thanks to 7 feet of March snow

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Thanks to about seven feet of fresh snow in March, Eldora Mountain Ski Resort is extending its season by at least a full week.

“We have the snow, so let’s ski it,” Eldora spokesman Sam Bass said.

The ski resort now plans to stay open until April 21.

“It’s starting to melt because it’s getting warmer, but there’s still so much of it that we’re gonna be in great shape until closing weekend,” Bass said.

According to Bass, Eldora recorded about 54 inches of snow during the mid-March storm that buried Denver and the Front Range. The fresh snow added to the ski resort’s base, helping keep parts of the mountain that are usually melted by now in good shape.

“The big secret of the whole ski industry is that this is the best time of year. There’s so much demand in the early season when there’s very little terrain open, and then this year, the whole mountain is covered, and people stop coming. So, the experience this time of year is just a night and day difference than if you were to visit in November or December,” Bass said.

He says it is possible Eldora could extend its season again if wintry weather returns to the forecast. Still, Eldora is now on track to have the longest ski season in its 62-year history.

“If we are open until the 21st like we are planning to be, it’s going to be 171 days,” Bass said.

Eldora closed for one and a half days during the snowstorm in March, meaning the actual number of skiable days could end up at 169.5. However, it would still beat the previous record set in 2019 when Eldora was open for 166 days.

“That is just like an extra little bonus to our season,” Kamrynn Bonilla said.

Bonilla is an Ikon Pass holder and says she has spent 101 days on the mountain this season so far, the majority of which have been at Eldora.

“I’m so glad to be part of that because I love this sport,” she said.

Bonilla says with Eldora’s extended season, she is hoping to extend her own season, too.

“Hopefully around like 120. I’m trying to just get every day of this spring,” she said.
