CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's state television says the nation's military will issue a statement shortly.
The TV report Monday gave no details on the statement's contents. It would be the first statement by the military since millions participated in protests nationwide a day earlier demanding Islamist President Mohammed Morsi step down.
Earlier Monday, organizers of the protests called on the military to state openly it supports them.
Ahead of the protests, the powerful military last week warned it would intervene to stop the nation from entering a "dark tunnel." It demanded Morsi and his opponents find a compromise, though none was reached.
