EF-1 tornado hits western North Carolina town at speeds above 100 mph

WILKESBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A tornado touched down in the western North Carolina region Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the NWS damage report, the EF-1 tornado started at 6:45 mph and traveled 2.2 miles for three minutes, heading SSW and ending on Main Street in Wilkesboro, N.C. This area is approximately 30 miles east of Boone.

The tornado had an estimated peak wind of 105-110 miles per hour, putting it at the top of the EF-1 category. EF-2 tornados range from 111-135 miles per hour.

There were no reported injuries, but the EF-1 brought down numerous trees, ripped shingles off multiple homes and damaged an outbuilding.
